Wesh League – Division Three

Ammanford 2 Cwmamman United 0

Ammanford came out on top after the midweek derby meeting with valley rivals Cwmamman United, extending the gap between the two sides to 13 points on at the Rec on Wednesday evening courtesy of a 2-0 victory, writes Nick Davies.

In front of a bumper crowd, Ammanford could not have wished for a better start as Matthew Fisher put his side ahead with a well-placed header just three minutes in after Brett Enoch’s cross from the right.

However, the early breakthrough was not a sign of things to come and the visitors immediately laid siege to James Kirkwood’s goal in the hope of finding a quick response.

But the keeper was on hand to deny the away side on 18 minutes, holding a curling effort.

Cwmamman almost equalised from a corner minutes later, but a goal-bound header was cleared off the line by Enoch.

Some slick passing in the middle of the park saw Fisher set up Craig Frater inside the area, but the striker’s half-volley flew over.

Cwmamman continued to press forward, but the closest they came to levelling came and went when a free-kick curled and the hosts went into the break with their slender advantage intact.

After the interval, Frater went close again only for his effort to fizz past the post.

A second yellow card on 58 minutes for Ashley Johns handed the hosts a timely boost in their pursuit for three points, but the league’s third-placed side refused to lie down and fired an effort just wide on 66 minutes.

Ammanford flattened any momentum though when Frater played Mikey Morris in and he powered his effort home with 20 minutes to play.

Kurt Morgan almost made it 3-0 minutes later, but his lobbed effort clipped the bar and went over.

Substitute Matthew Jones almost made an immediate impact from the bench but his powerful strike from the edge of the area flew wide with five minutes remaining.

It mattered little though as the home side held on for a vital win.
