Welsh League Division Three

Ammanford 0 Treowen Stars 1

Ammanford suffered a setback in their race for the title as the 10 men of Treowen Stars secured a narrow 1-0 win thanks to a solitary goal from the penalty spot at the Rec, writes Nick Davies.

It all could have been very different had Craig Frater put away his early opportunity when Matthew Fisher flicked the striker through, but his effort hit the post.

On 17 minutes Mikey Morris whipped in a cross from the left, but it evaded everyone in the area. Only a minute later, Ammanford went close again but Ashley Richards’ shot deflected wide.

However, on 20 minutes the forward thought he had his goal.

After Morris cut inside and played to Fisher who flicked over the top, Richards managed to scramble the ball in, but the referee ruled the effort out for offside.

As the half drew to a close, Rhys Owen headed over from a set-piece as the hosts went into the interval well on top of proceedings.

But, the second half saw a more attack-minded Treowen.

The visitors started off the half the better side, but when one of their players appeared to stand on James Kirkwood in the Ammanford goal, he was dismissed along with his manager only seven minutes into the second period.

But, the decision only spurred the visitors and they converted a spot-kick, awarded for handball, just two minutes after the sending off.

The home side responded and almost levelled matters immediately, but an effort poked goalbound from a corner was cleared off the line.

Fisher was next to go close when his shot from a tight angle on 60 minutes was held following a mazy run down the right.

However, that was as close as the league’s second-placed side came to equalising.

Lloyd Davies made a last ditch sliding challenge to deny the opposition with 15 minutes left. But, the away side held on for an impressive victory which upset Ammanford’s title charge.

Ammanford now face third-placed Cwmamman United on Wednesday night.
