Division One West

Kidwelly 48 Amman United 19

Following a spate of late withdrawals, Amman United’s 17-strong scratch side travelled to face Division One West leaders Kidwelly.

With a full side, the visitors might well have given the leaders more to think about as both sides contributed to an entertaining game.

However, with Amman’s survival in the balance, they now find themselves six points adrift of safety, with matches rapidly running out.

Such was Amman’s selection problems that veteran coach Gareth Davies started at outside half while Ethan Edworthy, normally a flanker, took his place on the wing.

United had run Kidwelly close in the sides’ first meeting at Cwmamman Park earlier in the season in a match Amman should have won.

But Kidwelly dominated the first half of the return fixture and turned around at half-time 27-0 up.

The visitors battled away manfully with ever-presents Sean Mangan and Joel Foster giving a good account of themselves while Matthew Wrigley battled on despite injury when his side were left with no subs to replace him.

Amman’s set-piece and line-out functioned well enough, and they were also able to pinch a fair few of the opposition’s along the way.

The visitors showed great character in the second half to hit back and score three lovely tries with dependable flanker Alun Lewis rewarded with one and centre Jonny Bevan clinching another.

However, Amman’s best try was saved till last, as Gavin Lewis did the spadework before Rhys Williams rounded off the move to finish off a very good move.

As well as they played, the cold hard facts remain that United finished with no bonus points and are now staring down the relegation barrel with Ammanford set to visit Cwmamman Park on Saturday.

Amman Youth enjoyed a fine victory on Saturday as Karl Worsfold’s boys defeated Llandovery Youth 12-8.
