Anniversary Cup

Cefneithin 22 Llanelli Warriors 27

For those who couldn't wait for the rest of Super Saturday to start there was an entertaining match at Cae Carwyn where the home team went close to winning the Anniversary Cup, only to be pipped with the final move of the game.

Despite the early start, both sides managed to field strong teams as Cefneithin blooded several youngsters while the Warriors welcomed back some important players who had missed the previous week in Cardiff.

A surprisingly cagey first half saw the teams testing the other’s weak spots only to find defences were to the fore.

Simon Jenkins gave the Warriors lots going forward but it was Cefneithin who worked the early lead as Carl Pritchard's dynamic work created space out wide and they scored with a fine flowing try.

The Warriors got back into the game when captain Andrew Davies caught the home side napping near a ruck, so it was all square at the break.

The game opened out in the second half as the warm spring sunshine inspired the sides to stretch their legs as both sought the open spaces.

Wingers and full backs can rarely have seen such ball and there was plenty of exciting running.

Warriors' Adam Fussell scored the try of the game with a scintillating 50-metre run, but his score was overshadowed as Tim Williams claimed a brace for the hosts.

The odd try was Mark Lewis' short burst from a lineout to bring the Warriors level, but Sion Davies edged Cefneithin in front again.

Dylan Harris was the pick of the Warriors backs but Simon Day also looked sharp on his wing while Tony Whittaker had some neat touches.

The Warriors looked to their forwards to get them possession and Meredith Pugh and John Horwood grafted up front.

For the hosts, Ralph Evans was a towering presence in the line-out and Adrian Lewis was at the heart of everything positive for the greens.

The hosts added a bizarre try when a good chase saw the Warriors fluff a clearance kick and smart wing Kieran Morgan gathered to dive in at the corner.

Morgan was almost the double hero when he almost held up Simon Jenkins over the line but the Warrior got the ball down and again there was nothing between the sides.

As full time neared it seemed certain honors would be shared but a last change fell to the Warriors on the half way and half backs Lewis and Rowlands shifted the ball wide with Ben Kitson threatening and Harris on his inside, Nathan Lawson found enough space to cross out wide.

The conversion ensured there was no way back for Cefneithin and the Anniversary Cup remains in Warriors hands for another year.

The Warriors would like to thank Cefneithin for their continued support and generosity, which saw the hosts making another generous donation to the club's funds.
