Division One West

Gorseinon 59 Amman United 12

A patched-up Amman United travelled to Gorseinon with Dean Williams, Gavin Lewis, Ryan Williams, Rhys Thomas, Joel Foster and Gavin Elliott all unavailable.

Early injuries to Adam Poole (dislocated finger) and Liam Mangan (suspected wrist fracture) made things worse.

Such was the nature of Amman’s woes that flanker Alun Lewis and veteran coach Gareth Davies paired up at centre, and Tom Davies started at flanker before moving to the second row.

The visitors’ walking wounded maintained parity in a close first half and trailed only 14-12 at the interval after being awarded a penalty-try following a well-drilled pushover move, converted by outside-half Rhys Williams.

Wing Johnny Bevan added an excellent individual try, chipping over a static defence before leaving two defenders in his wake to touch down.

Matthew Wigley battled hard as ever for the cause, while full-back Adrian Thomas kept his side in the hunt with a solid kicking game.

But the home side ran riot in a second half in which United failed to score a single point.

Gorseinon targeted and exploited Amman’s weaknesses, particularly the unfamiliar centre pairing, and were able to score at will.

Were it not for some over-elaboration and selfishness from a few home players, the margin of victory could have been even more wide as three or four more try-scoring openings went begging.

A valiant effort from a scratch Amman side, but defeat leaves them next to bottom as a series of surprise results last week saw teams around them grab vital wins.?
