Welsh League Division Three

Ammanford 1 Lliswerry 1

Lliswerry bagged a late equaliser to salvage a point and ruin Ammanford’s hopes of a return to winning ways at the Rec on Saturday, writes Nick Davies.

Ammanford took early control over proceedings, but were forced to shoot from distance by the visiting defence, with Matthew Jones firing wide with three minutes gone.

The home side squandered their best chance of the first half when Rhys Owen flicked his header wide of the mark, after Ashley Richards headed back across goal for the returning centre-half.

With 23 minutes gone, the ever lively Brett Enoch fired wide and minutes later the visitors cleared their lines in the nick of time, as Richards’ knockdown looked set to fall in a good area for an attempt on goal.

Jones whipped in a brilliant ball, which nearly fell for Enoch to head home 27 minutes in, but the keeper was on hand to collect as the sides headed into the break at 0-0.

However, Ammanford’s persistence going forward finally paid off as another Richards knockdown fell for Matthew Fisher who fired low into the corner on the half volley 15 minutes into the second period.

But, as soon as they had gained the advantage, the hosts were reduced to 10 men when Richards was dismissed for a second yellow card.

Ammanford remained on top despite their one-man disadvantage, with Fisher coming close after cutting inside.

With 12 minutes left, Ammanford should have put themselves clear, but Craig Frater saw his header tipped wide before Fisher had his own attempt denied later on.

And Gruff Harrion’s men paid the price for their profligacy.

With the clock running down, Lliswerry cut inside from a failed clearance and fired into the corner from the edge of the box.

The league’s fourth-placed side were themselves reduced to 10 in the dying seconds, but they held on, with Ammanford recording their fourth consecutive match without victory come full-time.

The club would like to pass on its congratulations to forward Ashley Richards and his partner on the recent birth of their child.

Ammanford face Lliswerry in the return fixture on Wednesday, before they travel to Cardiff Grange Harlequins on Saturday.
