Division One West

Llangennech 5 Amman United 18

Amman United gained due reward for recent performances with a victory that saw them leapfrogging their way out of the bottom two in Division 1 West.

The win marked United’s first back-to-back victory of the season as well as their first triumph away from Cwmaman Park this campaign.

Despite a few key absentees, including Rhys Williams and Matthew Wrigley - the latter on the bench, this was perhaps Amman’s best all round team performance of the season,

Llangennech notched an early try, but, playing against a substantial wind, centre Rhys Thomas got Amman’s first points via a short-range penalty.

The Amman scrum again bossed their opposite numbers, while the back-row of open-side Alun Lewis, Number 8 Craig Ratcliffe and 18-year old Dan Jones were impressive as an unit. Behind the scrum, skipper Gavin Lewis marshalled his troops well and led by example.

Amman went after outside-half Adrian Thomas found touch with a kick to the corner and, from the subsequent line-out and maul, lock Gareth Williams – on permit from Brynaman, peeled away to crash over.

Centre Thomas added a penalty to give United a deserved 11-5 interval lead.

With the wind dropping after the restart, the Amman scrum received a blow when Liam Mangan was forced off through injury and Tom Davies filled in at tight-head.

The visitors extended their lead with a well-worked try when their backs broke up-field and wing Liam Smith finished off a length of the field move.

Amman kept Llangennech at arms’ length with a disciplined performance and some excellent tackling from the pack, including late replacement Karl Worsfold in a late cameo.

The broken home eight wilted near the end and were forced to go to uncontested scrums late on as Amman’s forward dominance took its toll.

Amman entertain Whitland at Cwmaman Park on Saturday.
