Division Three West C

Penygroes 21 Pontyates 13

Two tries from Carwyn Davies ensured Penygroes stretched their winning run to six matches and continued their march up the league thanks to a 21-13 victory over visitors Pontyates.

Three penalties from Cerith Evans enabled Penygroes to shade the first half by 9-6 against a strong gusting wind that favoured the visitors.

Despite their elemental advantage, the visitors were placed under huge pressure by a very aggressive and mobile Groes pack, brilliantly led by skipper and man of the match Shon Davies and the hosts were unlucky not to notch at least two tries in the first period.

Penygroes continued to press in the second half and a brilliant cross field kick from outside half Leighton Rees was gathered by left wing Davies, who darted across for his side's first try.

With the game opening up, the visitors enjoyed a spell of pressure on the host's line but found themselves unable to breach the hosts’ well-organised defence.

Groes stormed back on the attack and when a kick was charged down inside the visitors’ 22, the alert Davies collected to streak over for an opportunist try under the posts, converted by Cerith Evans.

With the hosts well in control, the visitors could only muster a late breakaway try in the dying minutes, but it was too late too late as Penygroes claimed a deserved victory.

Penygroes travel to Furnace on January 24 when they will be seeking to avenge the defeat suffered on the first day of the season.
