Division Three West A

Llandybie 18 Cefneithin 12

Llandybie came out on top in the bottom of Division Three West A clash which neither side could afford to lose.

The hosts should have taken an early lead, but full back Josh Williams saw his kick caught by the wind and drop wide.

A home advantage came soon enough though when Tom Griffith, back from a long lay-off due to a foot injury, put the ball wide for the forwards to pile on the pressure. The ball popped out of the resulting ruck on Cefneithin’s side, but Tom Morris was quick to the loose ball and picked up to dive over. The conversion was missed in the swirling wind.

Llandybie created further chances soon after but saw a five-on-three overlap wasted.

With 20 minutes gone, some poor tackling from the hosts gifted Cefneithin the lead as Dan Binner went over and Sion Walker added the extras.

In a battling affair, Llandybie’s Dai Lloyd powered forward to gain 20 yards for his side before Lyndon Davies collected to charge over and restore home advantage.

From another solid home scrum, Griffith fed Alex Wigley who released Daf Nicholas into space. The winger offloaded to Griffith in support and Davies was again on hand to score.

Llandybie lost centre Huw Williams to a knee injury and Merlin McClelland to a groin strain, but Williams never missed a tackle and drove the opposition backwards.

The visitors grabbed a late try from hooker Richard Anderson to move to within a score.

With pressure mounting Llandybie lost Griffith to injury and fly-half Alex Wigley was sin-binned for failing to retreat at a penalty.

A man short and with numerous changes to their ranks, the hosts found themselves on the back foot as Cefneithin went in search of a match-winning score, but when Dan Wigley fired a clearance kick fully 60 yards, he and Aled Tomasson gave chase, forcing the visitors to concede a penalty. Tomasson stepped up to secure the points and give Llandybie their first league win of the season.

On Friday, WRU chairman Gareth Davies will be in Llandybie carry out the official switch on of the club’s new floodlights at 6pm. To mark the occasion, Llandybie Juniors will take on Tumble Juniors.
