Division Three West A

Penybanc 19 Burry Port 11

Penybanc look to blow away the cobwebs early on after returning to league action for the first time in a fortnight with the visit of Burry Port.

But even the best laid plans can go awry, and a series of unforced errors in the opening quarter led to a growing frustration in the Tigers' ranks.

Against the run of play, industrious flanker Aled Danter was rewarded for his support play with a try, but Burry Port's two penalties ensured they took a 6-5 lead into the interval after a forgetful first half.

The second half opened with an improvement for the hosts as their forwards managed to get on top at the scrum.

The control gave fly-half Bradley Nicholls and centre Mathew Brayley a platform to work on.

A Brayley pass found veteran wing Christian Hughes who beat two defenders before supplying opposite wing Nathan Jenkins who raced in to finish a fine score. Nicholls slotted the conversion.

Suddenly, Banc's tails were up and Brayley and his centre college James Turrell grew in prominence while full back Owen Higgins, pinned back the visitors with a series of fine kicks.

A Burry Port knock-on ten yards out saw the Banc scrum power forward and claim a penalty try with Nicholls adding the extras. Banc No8 Chris Jones, prop Rhodri Jones and replacement lock Daniel Rees drove forward in search of a bonus point score but the visitors held firm to deny them.

A late try from Burry Port went unconverted.

Banc are likely to face another tough assignment on Saturday when they visit in-form Bynea.
