Division One West

Ammanford 54 Carmarthen Athletic 0

Ammanford received an early Christmas present as visitors Carmarthen Athletic were well and truly stuffed in Division One West.

The home team were positive from the start and as early as the 10th minute a five-metre penalty was quickly take by scrum-half Aled James, who touched down for the first score. Rhydian Morris converted.

Much of the remainder of the half was reminiscent of Ammanford’s form earlier in the season with several chances being blown and penalties turned down.

Athletic worked hard in defence but eventually cracked when a snipe down the blind side by James was supported by Craig Woodall, who was put clear for a try. Again Morris converted to ensure Ammanford took a 14-0 lead into the break.

The second half started much as the first had finished with plenty of Ammanford pressure.

But unlike before the break, when a penalty was given, Morris slotted it over to extend the advantage.

Suddenly the floodgates opened.

Within a couple of minutes, a break out of defence saw full-back James Owens put clear to score the first of his tries.

Liam Baker followed up with a charge that saw the prop taking three defenders over the line with him as the lead was pushed to 29-0.

With confidence flowing, Ammanford put on the show they had hinted at in flashes throughout the season.

Another break from their 22 followed by some slick passing saw Owens go over for his second. Morris adding the extras.

Coach Gareth Potter was able to make his changes and young Sion Williams was not on the field five minutes before he crashed over for the sixth try, Morris added the two.

A break by strong-running No 8 Marco Dallavalle saw the home team going through the phases to create a six-man overlap. Ceri Morris’ decision to opt for a cross-field kick seemed baffling until Baker collected and romped over to score.

The final try was a copy of the first with James taking a quick penalty and going over with Morris adding the extra to take the hosts beyond the 50-point mark for the first time in several seasons.

Athletic fought hard to the end but a Scroogep-like Ammanford defence ensured that the visitors did not register a point.

Ammanford now look forward to the valley derby when they take on Amman United early in the New Year.
