Welsh League Division Three

Cwmamman United 4 Treharris Western Athletic 3

A belter of a game at Grenig Park saw the home side trailing by three goals after just 23 minutes but go on to carve out an excellent win to remain third in the table.

Cwmamman started well and created their first chance after 10 minutes when the visitor’s keeper put Neil Phillips’s attempted tap-in out for a corner.

But there followed a bizarre 10-minute period which appeared to hand Treharris the result.

The first goal came when Mark Snell was left stranded after a chip over his head from 10 yards.

The second saw the ball bundled into the next following a badly-defended corner.

The third arrived on 23 minutes when a Treharris shot was misjudged by Snell who let the ball slip through his hands and Cwmamman were rocking against a side stuck in the relegation zone.

But the hosts were handed a lifeline when Andrew Bonomi was felled in the area by the visiting keeper, leaving the referee no option but to award a penalty.

Ashley Johns stepped up to slot in the resulting spot-kick.

On 35 minutes Cwmamman pulled another goal back when Bonomi drilled a low shot into an empty net after another error by Treharris’s keeper and with two minutes left in the first half, Cwmamman drew level when Phillips 20-yard free-kick was deflected into the net.

After the break, Cwmamman looked the more likely to go on and win in a thoroughly entertaining game on a bitterly cold afternoon.

Cwmamman had two decent shouts for further penalties in the seconed half, but on both occasions the referee waved play on.

With ten minutes remaining, a Steven Hughes shot seemed destined for the top corner only for an outstanding save to appear to have earned the visitors a share of the spoils.

However, three minutes on the clock, Bonomi burst clear and, despite seeming to have taken the ball too wide, his powerful low shot went through the keeper’s legs to give the home side maximum points.

Next week Cwmamman host league leaders Llanelli Town (KO 2pm).

Cwmamman United reserves travel to Park Travellers while the thirds visit Sunnybank. Both matches kick off at 2.30pm.
