Division One West

Felinfoel 27 Amman United 20

Despite another away defeat, there were many positives for Amman to take from this performance after the long break from competitive rugby.

In a tight tussle that could have gone either way, Felinfoel - always strong at home and having hammered Crymych 53-0 recently - helped make this an attractive, attacking game.

An early Rhys Williams penalty put the visitors ahead.

Amman’s scrum dominated and the lineout worked well, but their downfall was their errant mauling, which was to prove their ultimate undoing.

Foel levelled at 3-3, before Amman, who welcomed back Dean Williams following his recent injury, regained the advantage with a penalty try, awarded after Johnny Bevan broke and was taken down before being allowed to finish off.

Gavin Lewis popped over a dropped goal, before the hosts took advantage of Amman’s maul problems to grab an injury-time try.

In the second half, Amman took an absolute age to get going, and before they had organised themselves, despite dominating up front, found themselves behind as Foel exploited the visitors malfunctioning maul to grab two similar tries and a 27-13 lead.

Amman finally woke from their slumber to dominate the final quarter, but had given themselves far too much to do.

They battered the home try-line.

Joel Foster’s lightning break from halfway was just held up on the line, before siilarly,Johnny Bevan was similarly thwarted inches short of touching down.

Amman freshened things, and the new legs of Tom Davies went over for a nice try ten minutes from the end.

Amman chased the game to the bitter end, but ultimately ran out of time.

They did however have the consolation of a losing bonus point to show for their efforts.

United have a free weekend this Saturday, returning with a home fixture against league-leaders Kidwelly on December 20.
