League Three West A

Penybanc 10 Pontyberem 19

Penybanc returned to action after the autumn series by hosting unbeaten league leaders Pontyberem, but were unable to maintain their own charge towards the top of the table.

After a blistering opening five minutes, prop Zac Rees almost charged over but quick ball allowed full back Wayne Williams to squeeze over in the corner. Fly-half Bradley Nicholls added a superb conversion.

Banc continued to push forward, retaining the ball well for periods but stout defence from the away team snuffed out a couple of chances.

The big left boot of the Bont skipper kicked three great penalties before Nicholls added one of his own.

With half-time beckoning, the Tigers were guilty of some half-hearted tackling and the visitors powered over for a 14-10 interval lead.

The sides went toe to toe in the second half in a physical 40 minutes where no quarter was given.

Locks Carl Rees and Gethin Harris put in their usual big shifts while behind the scrum, Williams and Nicholls shone before the latter retired injured.

The Tigers had their chances with a couple of breakaway opportunities and both kickers missed a couple of penalties, but in fairness, Bont had the extra edge and scored late on to secure the win.

Banc can be proud of their efforts but will be looking to shore up the defence as they head to Bont for a reverse fixture in the Swalec Bowl.
