Division One

Dinefwr a'r Fro 2 Cardiff University 1

Dinefwr continue to find their feet in Division One as they reach the midway point of the season sitting comfortably in mid-table with a game in hand on their nearest rivals.

The Ammanford-based side entertained Cardiff University in a rearranged fixture at the weekend and claimed a well-deserved win.

The hosts came flying out of the blocks and quick ball from the start saw Dinefwr turning over the visitors from the starting push back and press towards goal.

Dinefwr proved the dominant side early on, launching wave after wave of attack at the visiting students who remained on the back foot.

The defence were unable to hold out for long however and on nine minutes Alison Johnston controlled an aerial cross to claim the opening goal.

The hosts doubled their lead on 15 minutes when a midfield breakaway from player-coach Ria Bowen released Amy Brookes who found the evergreen Jozan Morgan to fire home and extend Dinefwr’s advantage.

With Dinefwr continuing to press, the students looked to hit back on the break and the tactic almost paid dividends but for man-of-the-match Emily Williams, along with Claire Thomas, making crucial interceptions to ensure the homesters took their 2-0 lead into the interval.

After the restart, the visitors stepped onto the throttle and went in search of a comeback.

The visitors gained a series of penalty corners, but failed to find the net with stand-in Dinefwr goalkeeper Catrin Soons hot off the mark.

Dinefwr continued to put in numerous efforts on goal but the students kept them out.

With the hosts pressing, an interception by the Cardiff defence saw the visitors claw their way back into the game with a goal on 65minutes.

But with time on their side, Dinefwr were able to hold out and claim their last victory before they return to action in February.

Following the break Dinefwr a'r Fro are looking to introduce an additional training session for mixed senior hockey with a view to setting up the county's only men's hockey team. All fitness level and abilities welcome.
