Ammanford AFC were knocked out of the second round of the League Cup 3-2 by Aberdare Town on Tuesday night in an exciting encounter, writes Nick Davies.

The visitors travelled to Aberaman Park to play the rearranged game under floodlights, and they fell behind almost immediately. Sam O’Sullivan found himself in open space from 20 yards and his shot squirmed under James Kirkwood’s body after one minute.

On 22 minutes, Ashley Richards was flicked through on the left, and he won his side a corner. From Ben Soal’s whipped in delivery he headed home at the front post to equalise for the away side.

Midway through the half, Aberdare wasted an opportunity when their striker headed wide when well placed. They were nearly made to pay for it, as Richards was only denied by a last ditch tackle soon after.

On the stroke of half time, the hosts nearly did take the lead, but when the ball fell for their defender, from a corner, he could only blast over.

After the interval, Ammanford started strongly. Dayle Selvage’s mazy run gave him a golden chance to put his side ahead, but he scuffed his shot.

Against the run of play, the home side edged into the lead when Scott Witford’s free-kick from the right cannoned in off Ammanford’s right post on 52 minutes.

Craig Frater was introduced and he nearly got an assist from a free-kick, but Euros Griffiths headed over. Then on 62 minutes, Soal curled over from the edge of the area.

The lead was doubled when O’Sullivan doubled his tally for the game, as he slotted home on 66 minutes.

Ammanford responded by laying siege on the Aberadre goal and were rewarded, with only 11 minutes left. Frater brought the ball down, hesitated in the area before smashing into the top corner to reduce the deficit.

Richards headed wide a minute later as Ammanford pressed on in search of the equaliser. They came close when Morris fired just over the bar with two minutes remaining, but they just fell short as Aberdare advanced.
