Amman United 20 Gorseinon 17
ENTERING the last passage of play, Amman United, trailing 17-13, were staring down the barrel of another disappointing loss, but managed a last gasp try from busy wing Liam Smith to grab victory from the jaws of another defeat.
It took almost 25 minutes before Amman’s first real threatening attack.
Full-back Gavin Lewis’ chip ahead almost finished off by wing Liam Smith who couldn’t quite get the downward pressure.
A second Steel penalty on the stroke of half-time gave the visitors a 11-3 lead at the break.
Steel’s accuracy stretched his side’s advantage to 14-3 after 50 minutes, but Amman were beginning to get on top upfront.
Following good phases of play, Karl Worsfold and Matthew Wrigley’s sniping runs were halted inches short, and from the resulting scrum, Gorseinon went backwards at a rate of knots, giving the referee the easiest of decisions, awarding the penalty try, converted by outside half Rhys Thomas.
He then brought his side to within a point with a penalty on the hour and Amman, sensing the victory they desperately sought, almost went ahead from an interception by centre Daryl John, but they couldn’t finish off.
Gorseinon broke away, and with wing Stewart Herbert isolated, he was penalised, and Steel coolly kicked the penalty with ten minutes left.
With time almost up, a misspass wide out put in wing Smith for a killer try.
