Division Two West

Tycroes 15 Aberystwyth 18

Playing with the elements in the first half, Tycroes set about their opponents and dominated the early possession.

The hosts controlled the line-outs, but the scrum proved to be their Achilles' heel, and throughout the Tycroes scrum was put under extreme pressure. It was only the courage of number eight Aaron Price, who picked up the ball while going backwards, that stemmed the Aber steamroller.

Tycroes opened the scoring on the quarter hour when flanker Phil Williams showed a clean pair of heels to race under the posts. Carwyn Richards added the conversion.

Mathew Evans went over on 35 minutes to open the visitors account, Jason Rees converted.

Richards slotted over a penalty just before the interval to give the home side a 10-7 half-time lead.

Rees levelled the scores just after the break with a well-struck penalty but Tycroes regained the lead when captain for the day, John James, picked up on a narrow-side ruck before forcing his way over in the corner, the conversion was unsuccessful.

Mathew Evans grabbed his brace of tries in the 74th minute when the Aber backs managed to round the Tycroes corner, the conversion failed.

With the teams in deadlock it was only a matter of time before the visitors were afforded the opportunity of kicking themselves into the lead and after one failed penalty and drop goal, Rees kicked over a penalty two minutes before time.

Tycroes were given the chance of levelling the scores just prior to the end but with a strong wind against them they decided to run the ball where they were penalised for crossing.

A disappointing end to a highly competitive game.

Tycroes find themselves home to Haverfordwest next week.
