Pontycymmer 10 Cwmgors 31

Cwmgors ran out convincing winners at the end of a tough assignment was passed with flying colours.

Pontycymmer has always been a daunting venue and proved no different during a very tight first half.

The visitors did take the lead with an early penalty from scrum-half Caron Jones, and things got even better for the Cherries when they recycled well and some excellent support play saw wing Chris Jones cross for the opening try, which Caron Jones converted.

Both sides missed kickable penalties before Cymmer landed one just before the interval to reduce the arrears to 10-3.

Cwm were not to have things all their own way however and soon after the break they were stopped in their tracks when the hosts barged over for a corner try.

But the visitors’ advantage lead was regained with a well-worked score after an excellent move was finished by man-of-the-match Caron Jones for his second.

jones added the extras and then his speed of thought from a quick tap–penalty saw him catch out a sleeping defence to go under the posts for another score.

The Cherries earned a bonus-point when replacement Dan Morgan’s superb break carved the defence open before another sub, second row replacement Josh Jones, took the pass to go over. Darren Howells added the conversion.

Cwm could have added another late try, but a dropped pass prevented number five in a pleasing all-round team performance from the visitors, for whom another Josh Jones made an excellent First XV debut at full-back.

Cwmgors face a tough task in the Swalec Plate on Saturday when they entertain in-form Ystalyfera at the Maerdy, before the eagerly-awaited derby clash at home to Brynaman the following Saturday.
