Division Two West Central

Taibach 25 Cwmgors 31

Cwmgors bounced back to winning ways with a bonus-point victory on their trip to Taibach in Division Two West Central.

The Cherries got off to a bright start and were soon 5-0 ahead when from a solid platform and fine forward play, outside-half Steff Rees conjured a quick break that baffled the home defence and left him clear to touch down.

A home penalty made it 5-3, but quick turnover ball from a charge-down made its way to man of the match Rees and he left a trail of defenders in his wake as skipped in for his second score.

A converted Taibach try reduced the deficit, but Cwm claimed their third before half-time when the dominant visiting forwards got the rumble on again.

From a rolling maul, former Vardre Number 8 Dylan Hills capped a fine personal performance with a try. Rees added the conversion.

The home side grabbed a second converted try after the break, but normal service was soon resumed as Cwmgors grabbed the all-important bonus-point when excellent work from the pack created an opening for open-side flanker Rob Clive to go over.

In a ding-dong match, Taibach hit back for a third try, but the last word was with the visitors as outstanding lock Liam Jones crashed over the whitewash.

Clive and Hills also impressed, and there was an excellent performance from emergency scrum-half Carwyn Lewis, who stepped into the breach.

Taibach earned a losing bonus point by kicking a last-gasp penalty.

Cwmgors - this season working under new forwards coach Richard Grieg and backs coach Matthew Dunn - will be looking for a similar performance when they entertain Resolven at the Maerdy on Saturday.
