Division Three West A

Cefneithen 17 Penybanc 37

Penybanc made the short trip to Cefneithin looking to build on last week’s opening day victory.

Despite a reshuffled back-line, the visitors still looked strong on paper while the hosts had struggled to muster a full side due to absences of their own.

The game started slowly with the sides sizing each other up before the Tigers broke the deadlock when Owen Higgins made the initial break for full back Wayne Williams to go over. Higgins added a penalty shortly after for an 8-0 lead.

Cefn replied with a try and penalty of their own to lock the scores.

Young props Zac Rees and James Harris managed to get on top of their more experienced opponents and from a dominant scrum, in-form fly-half Mathew Lloyd went over under the sticks, Higgins converting.

The experienced Christian Hughes, who had a solid game fed former Cefn wing Andy McCall, to earn the visitors a 22-10 halt-time lead.

Banc again dominated the opening 20 minutes of the second half with lock Carl Rees and flankers Gethin Harris and Dane Bush getting through a huge amount of graft, and it was a Harris offload that allowed player-coach Owen Williams to give the try scoring pass for his namesake Wayne to clinch the bonus point.

Lloyd then delivered a delightful pass for Williams to show his class once more and claim his hat-trick.

Scrum-half Owen Williams added another one before two yellow cards took the wind out of Banc’s sails and allowed Cefn to go over late on.

The Tigers will face sterner tests ahead but now enjoy a weekend off with two from two before entertaining Tumble on October 4.
