Division Two West Central

Cwmgors 14 Maesteg Celtic 29

Cwmgors went down to a streetwise Celtic side with a significantly bigger pack in the Division Two West Central fixture at the Maerdy.

The main damage was done in a dominant Maesteg performance during the first half as, by the interval, the visitors had established a commanding 22-0 advantage - pulling the strings at outside-half was former Llanelli, Neath, Swansea and Maesteg veteran Luke Richards, who showed his experience to marshal his troops.

Cwmgors did made a bright start, and were on the attack inside the opening ten minutes, battering the away tryline, only to concede turnover-ball.

Celtic countered superbly to create the overlap and run the length of the field and score a converted try.

Cwm defended well, but the bounce of the ball seemed to be going with the visitors, and they capitalised with a second counter-attacking try.

With an uphill task after the interval, Cwmgors got their reward with a touchdown after some good phase play and excellent forward pressure created the opening for number eight Dylan Hills to dab down a try. Steff Rees converted.

Cwm’s attempted great escape was halted in its tracks when Maesteg crossed for a killer bonus point earning try.

To their credit, the Cherries stuck to their task to the death and grabbed a deserved reward for their later efforts when openside flanker Ioan Davies crossed for a late try. Replacement scrum-half Caron Jones added the conversion.

A fine team performance from Cwmgors, but second best against a very good side on the day.

Cwmgors have a bye in the Cup on Saturday, returning a week Saturday (October 4) away against Taibach.
