Towy ABC got the amateur boxing season off to a flying start on Friday night in Pontyberem Hall where ten excellent bouts showcased the talents of fighters from Cwmcarn, Trostre, Gwent, Premier and Gelligaer.

The visiting clubs opened the show with some fantastic crowd-pleasing boxing, but the best was to come after the interval when the Towy boys hit the ring.

Kyle Mayes took on Sammy Lee from Gwent in an excellent hard-fought bout which saw the Towy fighter dominating the first round. The second round was a far tighter affair and Lee came good in the third to win the contest by a unanimous decision.

Towy ABC’s reigning Welsh champion at 66kg Jake Anthony stepped up to face 70kg Welsh champion Kyron Jones from Gelligaer in the glamour bout of the night and did not disappoint.

Jones is a five-time Welsh champion and British champion and will be representing Wales in the European Championships at the end of the month.

However, Anthony came out with a cool head with a clear gameplan.

He boxed with power and skill and took the first round with good clean shots.

The second round saw Jones surging back with both fighters boxing well and chipping away.

In the third, Anthony came out rearing to go and once again he threw some nice clean punches to dominate the end of the bout.

To the delight of the crowd, home favourite Anthony came away winner, albeit by split decision.

Towy’s Huw Francis then faced Phillip Price of Cwmcarn and boxed exceptionally well in a close fight were the decision could have gone either way.

Price was named winner by a split decision.

Newcomer Ryan Redfern in only his second ever bout enjoyed an exhibition contest against the very experienced stablemate Phil Jones with both boxers giving their all in an excellent display.

The final bout saw Towy’s Spencer Thomas facing Danny Tinkling from Cwmcarn.

In a hard-fought battle with both boxers showed strength and ability and Thomas gave Tinkling a count in the third before going on to claim the fight with a unanimous decision.

An excellent night of boxing for Towy ABC saw the club enjoy three wins out five.

Jake Anthony ended the night on top with the Alun Claude Davies Memorial Cup for boxer of the night.

Towy ABC would like to thank all its sponsors and supporters for making the evening a success.
