Ystalyfera 79 Gwaun cae Gurwen 94

On Saturday, Gwaun cae Gurwen travelled to Ystalyfera safe in the knowledge that they were already promoted, but still requiring two points to become league champions.

Playing on what the Waun considered a pudding of a green compared to their own and with difficult lines, the Waun found themselves trailing 23–4 after the first three ends and 29–17 after five.

By the completion of the tenth, they had closed the gap to just one point, trailing 42–41.

Normally tea would have been taken but at the request of the hosts refreshments were postponed until the end of the game.

Surprisingly the move worked in favour of the Waun as they took the lead by 67–62 after 15 ends and completed the game 94–79 in front.

The win ensured they collected 12 points to Ystalyfera’s two and claimed the divisional championship.

The officers of the club would like to thank the players for their dedication and contribution throughout the season as only five years ago it appeared that the team would fold due to a lack of membership.

However, there will be no resting on laurels and urge more practice to improve the standard of play overall.

Members are reminded of a meeting to be held at the pavilion on Monday, September 22, at 4pm to plan for next season.
