SWCA – Division One

Ammanford (149-1) beat Gowerton (148) by nine wickets

Ammanford maintained their 100% record and surged clear at the top of the SWCA first division by thrashing a poor Gowerton team at the Park on Saturday.

Winning the toss, the visitors had the temerity to bat first, soon paying for that decision as opening bowler Tom Maynard broke through with the score on four.

Gowerton found the spinning duet of Matthew Fisher and Matthew Roberts impossible to resist, and wickets fell at regular intervals as Gowerton limped to 102 for eight.

A brief ninth wicket revival between Will Jenkins (23) and opener Adam Bond (53) saved a modicum of blushes, but Gowerton finally succumbed for 148 with an over to go.

Matthew Roberts starred once again with six wickets for 62, keeping him at the top of the SWCA bowling averages with a remarkable 27 wickets from six matches.

Matthew Fisher picked up two for 34 and lies in second place on the league wicket-taking leaderboard behind Roberts.

Despite losing opener Hedd Jones for 11, Ammanford made extremely short work of passing Gowerton’s total.

Skipper Alun Evans joined opener Rhys Culley, and within 20 overs the game was over.

Evans was unbeaten on 77, while Culley carried his bat for a half century.

Evans is currently averaging 145 and Culley 66.

Little wonder with batsmen and bowlers on top of the averages that Ammanford are sitting pretty, 28 points clear at the top of the table.

Next week they travel to play third placed Tata Steel in the final game of the first half of the season.
