Division Four South West

Cwmgors 34 Pyle 7

Cwmgors were finally crowned Division Four South West champions after piling on the points against Pyle.

After fluffing their lines in the penultimate game, the Cherries rose to the occasion when needed with a rousing victory to earn their second divisional title in successive seasons.

The defeat to Cwmavon took place in a quagmire – a million miles from the glorious evening sunshine which welcomed Pyle to Parc y Werin and allowed Cwm to play their expansive game and running rugby.

It took just five minutes for the title hopefuls to open the scoring when the ball was run from deep and centre Gareth Jewson, playing on permit from Cwmllynfell, went over for the opening score.

But any notion that Pyle were just there to make up the numbers were quashed when the visitors pounced on lost possession, and quick ball and a kind bounce produced a converted try, which set the home support twitching.

However, normal service appeared to be resumed minutes later when some excellent interplay and neat passing allowed full-back Connor Edgecombe to sprint over. Record points-scorer Steff Rees added the conversion.

Pyle’s big, strong pack found themselves being unceremoniously pushed off the ball on their own scrum, and from the possession won, centre Jewson claimed his second try of the night under the posts. Rees again converted and added a penalty near half-time to ensure a 22-7 interval lead and put the champagne on ice.

A draw would have been enough for the title, but Cwmgors managed it in style by grabbing another bonus-point victory after Pyle failed to find touch and Jewson provided the platform from inside his own half for No8 Richard Gregg to claim the killer try.

The Cherries finished off with a converted penalty try at the death as Pyle buckled to the soon-to-be-crowned champions’ relentless pressure.

The convincing victory was nothing less than Cwmgors deserved after a fantastic season and another superb team performance, with man-of-the-match and skipper Rob Clive inspirational.

Cwmgors will be celebrating their second title win in consecutive seasons at the club’s annual presentation evening on June 21.
