Division Four West

Furnace 23 Penybanc 20

The Tigers headed for Furnace on Wednesday night for the first of three games in ten days before as the curtain comes down on the season.

After a crushing Furnace in the home fixture, Banc were in confident mood despite missing a number of players to injury and unavailability.

The game started at frantic pace with both sides giving their all.

Banc full back Wayne Williams opened the scoring before Furnace struck back.

Wing Chris Davies added a second score for the visitors shortly before Chris Jones, playing centre for the day, stormed over after a typically powerful charge to secure the visitors a 15-7 interval lead.

Despite the enforced changes, the Banc scrum and lineout operated efficiently with prop Zac Rees enjoying a fine game.

After a number of scrums on the home line, Banc should have turned the screw and scored but instead they allowed Furnace to clear their lines.

A score then would have put the game to bed but Furnace took advantage of Banc’s wastefulness and hit back with a try and penalty.

The Furnace outside half, who was outstanding all night, conjured up some magic to take them further ahead with a solo effort before a delightful pass from Banc centre Wayne Price saw Davies outstrip the home defence for a great second try to tie the scores at 20-20.

Banc had their chances but heroic defence from the homesters and a huge clearance kick saw them back on the front foot and a snap drop-goal saw them take the spoils.

The Tigers picked up two valuable bonus points and with fourth-place secure, will look to finish the season on as high when they travel to Fishguard on Sunday and host Hendy on May 10th.
