Division Four South West

Pyle 11 Cwmgors 23

With three league games remaining, Cwmgors have a two-point lead in Division Four South West and a game in hand on their closest challengers following a hard-fought win at Pyle.

Against a side with promotion aspirations of their own, Cwmgors knew they would be likely to face a tough task.

The home side made their intentions known from the start: a drop-goal, a penalty and first half try established an 11-3 lead for the hosts.

Steff Rees broke the existing Gors points-record for the season, slotting over a penalty.

But the visitors were in touching distance by half-time when Pyle overplayed and lost possession. From the turnover ball, wing Iwan Davies sped over in the corner for the try.

Cwmgors improved in the second half and bossed the game.

Following a good run, Cwm’s other wing Steve Edwards crossed for a second try as the visitors earned the lead for the first time.

Some neat passing among the Cwm forwards then sucked in the home defence, allowing hooker Carwyn Williams to crash over.

Steff Rees converted, and added a later penalty to take his tally to an impressive club record of 299 points for the season.

The Cherries went all out for the fourth bonus-point try, but passes did not go to hand and the elusive score failed to materialise.

Nevertheless, the victory was another step forward in Cwm’s title-chase against a very good side, with stalwart second row Jamie Bradley named man of the match after another excellent performance.

Cwmgors make the short journey to Betws on Saturday before entertaining Cwmavon on May 10. They also face a rearranged home fixture against Pyle.
