Jayne Stephens Cup Final

Llandeilo Town 1 Pontarddulais Town 1

(Pontarddulais won 4-3 after penalties)

It has been 20 years since Llandeilo last appeared in a cup final and they were looking to write a little piece of history as they took on Pontarddulais in the climax of the Jayne Stephens Cup at Stebonheath.

Bont started the brighter and tested the Llandeilo back four with a series of long balls. They almost claimed an early lead only for a last ditch challenge by Llandeilo skipper Leon Jones to keep them out.

With vocal support from the stands, Llandeilo began to impose themselves with some smart passing and a crisp strike on goal from Jamie Woodall gave them the lead just before half-time.

The second half started like the first with early pressure from Pontarddulais - and soon the pressure paid and they levelled.

Llandeilo’s young side continued to press hard and created a number of chances.

Tom McCarley went close with a header and a shot before Sion Mattey carved an opening for himself only for his effort to fly over the bar.

In extra time both teams went hunting for the winner, and again the Llandeilo defence was forced to stand firm with Simon Rees dominating the aerial battles.

With the clock running down Llandeilo claimed a penalty, but the referee waved away their appeals for handball.

The drama continued in the final minutes when Charlie Walters poked the ball home from close range only for his effort to be ruled offside.

Both sides scored their first three penalties in the shoot-out lottery, but Llandeilo’s Gareth Norton fired his effort wide and Charlie Walters saw his spotkick punched clear by Bont keeper Kyle Powney.

Pontarddulais fired home their final penalty to claim a 4-3 victory.

Llandeilo now turn their attention to the Reserve Division One promotion race when they take on Tumble on Thursday.
