Division Two West

Amman United 37 Newcastle Emlyn 30

Amman United made it two wins in four days thanks to a thrilling victory over Newcastle Emlyn under the Cwmamman Park floodlights to climb to sixth in the table.

Amman missed the chance of an opening try after a bright start, fluffing their lines when they had men over, but made amends when flanker Alun Lewis crashed over from the next move. Adrian Thomas made up for an earlier penalty miss with the conversion.

Dean Williams and Thomas combined to send hooker Doug Jenkins on a lung-busting 40-yard run and, from the next phase, Thomas finished off in the same corner.

From a tapped penalty, scrum half Joel Foster carbon-copied his weekend try with a burrowing score, knocking the referee off his feet in the process.

Emlyn are certainly not a bad side, and always tried to play running rugby.

The visitors hit back with a corner try after Karl Worsfold overplayed and lost possession.

Despite their strong performance, Amman’s injury jinx struck again as Dean Williams (hamstring) and Tristan Manning limped off before half-time.

Amman clinched a bonus point when wing Rhys Williams intercepting on his own 22 and scampered all of 80 yards, handing off two defenders on the way, before diving over.

The visitors’ relentless enterprise brought them a second try with some excellent interplay on the stroke of half-time.

Amman switched Lewis to scrum-half following Foster’s yellow card early in the second half, and United conceded a series of penalties which saw their lead cut to 22-16.

However, Johnny Bevan and Sean Mangan battered the visiting defence with a number of surging runs, and - from the rolling maul – Jenkins finished off. Thomas converted.

Emlyn countered again in a ding-dong clash and were awarded a penalty try for their efforts, but a further Thomas penalty gave Amman a 32-23 advantage before the visitors created a smart overlap and really should have notched the try.

From the very next move, they got their rewards as they cut through the Amman midfield to grab the score and leave the home support biting their nails.

But Amman held their nerve and an injury time catch-and-drive from the line-out saw the excellent Jenkins power home for his second try.
