Neath and District Reserve Open Cup Semi-final

Giants Grave 2 Bryn Rovers 6

Reigning champions Bryn Rovers marched into their fourth cup final in three years with an emphatic win at newly-crowned league champions Giants Grave.

The first 15 minutes saw the home team on top and it was left to Bryn keeper Richard Lloyds to come to the rescue.

After seeing off the early charge, Bryn’s Nick Spowart broke through from midfield and attempted to lob the keeper only for his effort to go narrowly over.

Chris Jones scored the first Bryn goal after a mazy run that saw him skip past four defenders before a firing home a smart finish.

The goal was the only one of the first half, but Bryn went into the interval knowing that progress was in their hands.

After the break, Bryn produced some of their best football this season.

With Grave starting the half slowly, Julian Jones burst through and was left one-on-one with the keeper. His cool calm finish hit the net and the upset was well and truly on the cards.

Bryn were soon 3-0 up when the impressive Christian Jones scored with a smart flick-on header to beat the keeper.

The visitors could have settled the game but they were guilty of missing a few easy chances and their profligacy in front of goal spurred Grave.

The hosts pulled one back when the ball was bundled over the line from short-range by Mike Davies.

The hosts at last found their feet and started to craft a few chances of their own, but when Jones drilled a fantastic 25-yard strike into the top corner to reclaim the three-goal advantage the game result was settled.

Jonny Thomas made it 4-2 before Spowart capped a fine display with a great goal.

Man of the match Jones completed his hat-trick late on after some great build-up play from the visitors.

Bryn, who have won the trophy for the past two seasons, now look forward to a final against Briton Ferry - date to be confirmed.
