Division Two West

Mumbles 34 Amman United 10

Amman United cobbled together a makeshift side and put up a performance much more pleasing to coaches Tony and Gareth than their previous showing against the impressive seasiders.

With a core of regulars out for the foreseeable, Amman drafted in a few new names more usually plying their trade in the Quins ranks and packed down with Christian Gregory and Geraint Fry in the second row and Craig Ratcliffe at flanker while Matthew Madge stepped up as hooker.

An early converted corner try, followed by a penalty from fourth-in-the table Mumbles failed to dampen Amman spirits despite falling 10-0 behind.

The visitors settled and hit back well when from a Mumbles fumble in midfield, the ball was turned over and wing Johnny Bevan gathered and beat two defenders to score in the corner.

Amman, with skipper Ryan Williams leading by example and Sean Mangan and Matthew Wrigley giving their usual solid shifts, fell further behind when they conceded a second.

United stayed in the game however with a well-worked second score of their own as lock Gregory peeled off scrum-half Williams’ feed to crash over.

Trailing 20-10 with 65 minutes gone, Amman more than held their own and were certainly still in the hunt.

But they conceded two sloppy late tries to leave the hosts with a flattering winning margin.

Amman will be hoping for a confidence-boosting win on their own ground on Saturday, when they will look to leapfrog eighth-placed visitors Maesteg.
