The father of the Amman Valley’s newest Welsh hero has described his joy at witnessing his son score his first try in the famous red jersey.

Alan Williams, along with the rest of his family, was at the Millennium Stadium on Saturday to watch Rhodri’s 74th minute touchdown complete the rout of Scotland.

The 20-year-old Scarlets Academy product made his third appearance for the national side, coming on as a 55th minute replacement at scrum-half for Mike Phillips.

The youngster had dad Alan – himself a former Swansea scrum-half – jumping for joy as he kept his cool to scoop up James Hook’s smart left-footed chip eight metres from the line to score and round off a fantastic day for Wales and the adoring thousands in the stand and at home.

“I was overjoyed,” said Alan, “and I still am.

“It was a fantastic occasion – one of those days that dreams are made of.”

The moment was all the more special as the majority of the Williams family was watching from the stand.

“We were all up in the third watching. It was incredible.

“Coming on with 26 minutes still to play I knew he had a chance, but to see it happens was just wonderful – something you have dreamed of all your life.

“It was a really special moment.”

The past six months have seen Rhodri take meteoric rise from Academy to Scarlets first team, to international debut and now international try-scorer.

“IT was a marvellous occasion when he got his first cap back against Tonga back in the autumn,” said Alan.

“And then to come on against Australia and face his all-time hero Will Genia was incredible – that was a really special moment, but then to come and score at the Millennium Stadium, well it just does not get any better than that.”

Rhodri himself has taken it all in his stride.

“He is a level-headed boy,” said Alan.

“He called in to Betws rugby club where I was working on Sunday as normal.”

Rhodri told the Guardian: “It was good. I enjoyed it.”

Despite achieving the career-defining landmark that every boy in Wales has dreamt of, he had no time to consider the momentum of his try.

“Once I had scored it was straight on with the game,” he said.

With a long career ahead of him, there will be plenty more joyous moments for Rhodri and Alan Williams to enjoy.
