Cwmgors lowered the colours of morning-leaders Nantyffyllon with a superb team performance which saw the Cherries leapfrog their way to the top of the Division Four South West table on points difference.

Cwmgors also have the cushion of two games in hand.

An early Steff Rees penalty put the home side ahead in this table-topper before some excellent interpassing ended with promising young wing Connor Edgecombe crossing for the opening try.

Cwmgors continued on the front foot and, against a well-drilled side with a big pack and dangerous backs, were able to grab a second try thanks to a lightning break from inside their own 22 which saw centre Gareth Drewson, playing on permit from Cwmllynfell, going over under the posts for a commanding and well-merited 15-0 half-time lead.

The second half proved a much closer affair with two very good sides slugging it out, but two well-marshalled defences were certainly on top. Cwmgors had a few promising rolling mauls, but without reward.

The home defence was outstanding, tackling like demons on their own try-line at times to keep the visitors out.

Young flanker Ioan Davies was named man of the match, but all agreed it had been a total squad effort from every single Cwmgors player that had won the day.

The referee is often given a hard time, but full marks to the man in the middle on this occasion, who gave an excellent performance also.

Cwmgors return in a fortnight’s time when they entertain Vardre.
