Division Two West

Aberavon Quins 14 Amman United 22

After losing their unbeaten home record the previous week, Amman travelled to rock-bottom Aberavon Quins hoping to cure their lack-lustre away form.

The Amman ran out victorious but not before they were given a tough encounter by a dogged home side still trying to find a first win.

On a forward-orientated day dictated by the heavy conditions, it wasn’t a day for spreading the ball and playing pretty rugby.

The Amman pack dominated the scrum and loose against a young and inexperienced Quins side, and a tight first half saw United lead 7-5 at the break after prop Liam Mangan had grabbed their solitary try following a number of pick and drives from his pack.

The visitors’ front eight continued their onslaught and after several penalties and scrums, backrow man Karl Worsfold peeled off to crash over for the try.

To their credit, the bottom side rallied well and hit back to grab the lead with a second try.

United knew they would have to knuckle down to earn the win - and that is what they did.

Ironically, on one of the few occasions the ball went along the backs, wing Stuart Herbert was fed out wide and went over for the try. Adrian Thomas added the conversion.

The Reds were able to consolidate from then on, controlling possession well and keeping things tight before a late penalty from Rhys Thomas took them two scores clear.

Alun Lewis was excellent in a dominant away pack again with Matthew Wrigley and Karl Worsfold superb.

Behind the scrum, Joel Foster was the pick while Cellan Phillips showed no rustiness while filling in at prop after a long lay-off.

Amman travel to Trebanos on Saturday.
