Llandovery College will have to wait another year before trying to win back the Christ College Brecon Sevens after this year’s tournament - scheduled for this Sunday (February 23) - was cancelled due to the flooding of the school pitches, writes Huw S Thomas.

Winners in 2012 and runners-up to King’s Worcester last year, the College were one of the favourites to take the Llangoed Hall Trophy.

Wales' premier schools sevens tournament had attracted a top quality field which included English visitors Millfield, Bryanston, Sherborne and Warwick as well as Wales’ top four independent schools - Llandovery College, Monmouth School, Rydal-Penrhos and Christ College.

Barry’s Ysgol Bro Morgannwg, and Cardiff’s Ysgol Glantaf were also in the field and so it was with extreme disappointment that Christ College’s Director of Sport, Tim Trumper, announced the decision.

“The relentless heavy rainfall over recent weeks has resulted in large volumes of standing water on our pitches.” said Trumper, whose son Will was in the Christ College squad.

“We’ve looked at this week’s weather forecast, consulted with our ground staff and our conclusion is that there really isn’t any prospect of any significant improvement to the pitches over the coming days.”

“ Sadly, there was no other choice but to make this decision in the interest of safety and out of courtesy to schools travelling long distances to compete in the tournament.”

Next year the Sevens will celebrate their 25th anniversary, the first tournament having been played back in 1991 to mark the 450 th anniversary of the school.
