Swansea Netball League Division Four
Ammanford 26 Steelers 17
Ammanford fielded a strong squad for their game against Steelers and were rewarded with a convincing victory in the Swansea League.
Ammanford have experienced a mixed start to the season, suffering two losses and a draw, but with a full side to call on, expectations were high.
In the first quarter Ammanford took a while to settle, with Gemma McWilliams linking the play between the defence of Alison Jones and Brittany Lewis, wing attack Beth Gilbert and shooters Mia Jones and Catrin Rees.
The Steelers defence worked hard, but every time they countered Amy James was able to force errors and make the interception.
Ammanford started the second quarter with a one-goal lead and the pack was shuffled Emily Janes took up the wing attack position. Ammanford settled into a good rhythm and ended the quarter having extended their lead to three goals.
The return of Leah Mahoney gave the Ammanford coach Denise Buckley more options and Mahoney moved to centre, supported by Gilbert with McWilliams taking up defensive duties.
The shooters played a hard game against the Steelers outstanding goal defence but by the end of the third quarter Ammanford still held a three-goal lead.
They had to dig deep in the final quarter, scooping up loose balls and making interceptions as the Steelers looked to fight back.
The Ammanford shooters kept their nerve and with the return of Alison Jones and player-of-the-match Janes they maintained the pressure.
Young Catrin Rees got the better of the goal defence and, with Mia Jones shooting well, Ammanford extended their lead to 26–17 by the end of the last quarter.
