GARNANT’S king of the ring Chris Jenkins claimed the WBC International Light-Welterweight crown with a stunning points win over hard-hitting Frenchman Christopher Sebire in Cardiff’s Motorpoint Arena on Saturday night.

The victory marked the high-water mark of a stunning year for the 25-year-old which has seen him turn pro, win Sky TV’s Prizefighter and remain undefeated.

Sebire was expected to prove a gruelling test for Jenkins, but the new dad showed his class in what ultimately proved to be a one-sided affair.

Jenkins, the self-proclaimed Rock ‘n’ Roller, earned a unanimous verdict from the three judges, with two giving him the fight 100-90 while the third scored it 100-91.

There was a flutter of nerves late on when Jenkins suffered a cut to the head.

However, it later emerged the injury was nothing more than a grazed ear courtesy of an accidental clash of heads between the two men.

Cwmgors boxing coach Ronnie Morris, who has nurtured Jenkins all the way up the fight ladder, was beaming with his charge’s efforts.

“We are absolutely delighted,” said Morris.

“We knew Sebire was going to be a tough fight — he is a genuine fighter.

“Our only concern really was before the fight.

“Sebire is tough as teak and with a great record.

“He also has a great defence, but we always felt Chris would get through.

“In the end Chris could not land as many of his punches as he would have liked, but he made sure that the ones which did get through Sebire’s defences were on the money.

“He really made them count.

“Chris performed really, really well.

“It was an excellent fight for Chris and he is delighted to have earned himself a WBC belt.”

Morris was not alone in his acknowledgement of Jenkins’ efforts. The Sky team were fulsome in their praise of the rising star, who enjoyed a glittering amateur career.

Jenkins, who is managed by Paul Boyce and fights out of Eddie Hearn’s Matchroom stable, already appears earmarked for a rise up the ranks.

Rumours already abound of a British title shot in the coming months, with the possibility of a European belt on offer in the not too distant future.

Morris added: “Chris is just taking things one step at a time, but he certainly earned himself plenty of plaudits on Saturday night and did his future no harm whatsoever.”
