Division Four South West

Cwmgors 39 Pontardawe 0

A saturated Parc y Werin saw Cwmgors relocate to their second home on Saturday and earn the bonus-point victory necessary to take them back to the top of Division Four South West - by a single point.

The excellent Maerdy pitch played well, and an early penalty from metronomic outside-half Steff Rees put the hosts ahead.

Cwm went further ahead with an opportunists’ try when a speculative kick ahead was gathered by on–permit centre Christian Madge to drive over.

Rees converted, and the Cherries showed no sign of letting up, dominating until half-time, and scoring a second try following a five metre line-out with prop James Varney getting the last touch from the resulting pushover. Rees’ conversion gave the hosts a commanding 20-0 interval lead.

The Ponty defence found themselves under ever increasing pressure from the resumption, and soon more good forward play from close range allowed scrum-half Lee Evans to dart in around the scrum and dab down a converted try.

Cwmgors, now in cruise-control, grabbed the inevitable bonus-point when No8 Richard Gregg crashed over the whitewash. Rees sent over yet another conversion, taking his impressive points tally for the season so far to more than 200.

With the back row of Ethan Price, Gregg and Darryl John outstanding, and hooker Cerith Dennard named man of the match, Cwmgors still had time to nab a late fifth try, with two minutes to go the Cherries’ other Madge, winger Gavin, grabbed a deserved score.

Cwmgors travel to winless basement side Cwmtwrch on Saturday before taking a two-week break, returning for a last-16 Swalec Bowl tie at Pyle on February 15.
