Ammanford 2 Dinas Powys 0
Ammanford had their defence to thank in a steely 2-0 win over Dinas Powys in the Division Two clash at the Recreational Ground, writes Nick Davies.
The hosts’ defence remained strong throughout the match, and it was left-back Rhys Fisher who got the opening goal for the home side. Rhys Morgan’s second attempt at a cross was met superbly by the head of Fisher at the back post to make it 1-0 after 10 minutes. This was after Ammanford had almost scored in the first minute.
The away side failed to impress in the opening half an hour and Ammanford almost capitalised before the break, as a deflected shot looped over the bar.
After the interval, the Dinas Powys goalkeeper was on hand to deny Ammanford and Jamie Rano, in Ammanford’s goal, matched this when he saved from the visitors attempt on goal 10 minutes later.
Powys started to pressurise an, like much of the country in recent days, Ammanford had to weather the storm. They did so with brilliance, as centre-back Euros Griffiths lead from the back to ensure the slender lead for the hosts remained intact.
There were nervy times in the Ammanford box though, as Rhys Owen cleared off the line with 20 minutes remaining and Fisher almost gifted the opposition a chance as he sliced his clearance into the box, only for the defence to make amends.
Owen James almost doubled the hosts’ lead, but again the keeper matched his shot. Rano was tested by the visiting side as he tipped over a corner as the pressure continued in the Ammanford half.
Substitute Luke Squires made certain of the three points for Ammanford as he netted with only eight minutes remaining on a wet and windy day.
