Division Two West
Amman United 59 Aberystwyth 22
Amman United bounced back to winning ways at Parc yr Aman, despatching a bright young Aberystwyth side in an entertaining Division Two West fixture and preserving their unbeaten home record in.
The rescheduled match was preceded by a minute’s silence for former Amman coach Phil John following his untimely death, aged just 58.
The home pack paved the way for success, with early forward pressure yielding an opening try as Sean Mangan crashed over, Adrian Thomas added the conversion.
The second try was almost a carbon copy as, from a forwards’ drive, returning flanker Andrew Lacey got the final touchdown.
Aber kicked a penalty to get on the scoreboard, before a charge-down under the posts almost gifted a try to Amman’s Alun Lewis who narrowly failed to control.
A neat offload put in the visitors to score a nice try, but Amman hit back as centre Ryan Williams’ burst to the line only to be held up just short, but the unrelenting pressure forced the referee to award the penalty try from the resulting scrum. Thomas converted.
Dean Williams’ trickery began a move that saw the ball fed out to waiting prop Tom Davies who crossed just before half-time.
The home forwards continued to cause havoc after the break, and the Aber eight buckled again as Mangan grabbed his second try of the day.
Lacey should have notched his second also, but took the wrong option with a try at his mercy. Rhys Thomas got one on the board for the backs before Matthew Wrigley crashed over to bring up 40 points.
Little wizard Gavin Lewis scored a great opportunists’ try against a tiring defence to bring up the half-century, but the visitors never gave in.
Aber continued their running game and were rewarded with two excellent running tries late on via their impressive right winger - sandwiched between his brace was a fine try of his own from his opposite number - Dean Williams, who raced in with a trademark score. Thomas converted to complete the scoring.
Amman expect a tough encounter at Skewen on Saturday.
