Amman United 48 Aberavon Quins 5
Amman United returned to winning ways to put basement-side Quins to the sword with a seven–try victory at Cwmamman Park.
Winless Aberavon are struggling at present and almost folded a fortnight before the season began due to a lack of players – a tragic situation for a club which in recent years has produced the likes of Richard Hibbard and James Hook as well as 70s legend Allan Martin.
United scrum -half Ryan Williams kept up his excellent form from the previous week with some early darts while Dean Williams again looked lively in attack.
Amman were forced to weather a spirited start from the visitors before opening the scoring when wing Johnny Bevan crossed after centre Tristan Manning created a gap with the crash ball.
In a scrappy, niggly first half, outside half Adrian Thomas’ boot extended the lead to 8-0 with a penalty.
Having squandered several gilt-edged openings through a poor final pass, a superb Amman try followed as backrow Karl Worsfold fed man of the match flanker Alun Lewis who took the ball on before finding Ryan Williams to add the finish touch.
Thomas converted, but the plucky Quins came back with a breakaway try after a kick-and-chase on the counter.
United claimed a third try on the stroke of half-time when Worsfold’s industry created an opening and Bevan did the spadework for hooker Doug Jenkins to take the tryscoring pass. Thomas again converted as the referee blew for half-time.
The bonus point arrived after the break when the Amman pack’s irresistible shove proved too much and, as Quins collapsed, the penalty try was awarded.
The visitors might not have a point to date, but to their credit they had a real go and only great Amman defence kept them at bay.
Hardworking prop Rob James saw the try-line beckoning late on but was grounded inches short. A similar fate then befell second-row Gavin Elliott after his 40-metre charge.
With Amman in full control, and the Quins defence tiring, twinkle-toed wing Dean Williams stepped in for two trademark tries each side of a try for full -back Joel Foster. Thomas put over two superb conversions from a huge angle.
Amman travel to Newcastle Emlyn on Saturday.
