Cwmavon 9 Cwmgors 13
CWMGORS’ RFC’s excellent start to the season in Division 4 South West continued with a third successive victory, this time away against Cwmavon, winning a tight game 13-9.
In an extremely tight opening half, Cwmavon shaded things at half-time with a solitary penalty to lead 3-0; the visitors did have their chances, though, but the final pass would not go to hand; a large Cwmavon front eight used the rolling maul to good effect, but the Cherries’ defence stood firm.
’Gors’ best opportunity came via full back Mike Hodges, whose lightning break almost opened up the home defence.
The hosts extended their lead with a penalty after the break, before outside-half Steff Rees reduced the deficit.
It was soon 9-3 with a third home penalty, but with the big Cwmavon pack begin - ning to wilt, Cwmgors’ fitness began to come into play, and they grabbed the crucial score of the game, the only try, when a very high up-and-under from Steff Rees came down with snow on it, was dropped by the covering full back, allowing Rees to finish off his handiwork to pick up the loose ball and dive over to score; he also converted his own try.
The visitors, for whom man of the match flanker Darrell John was outstanding, put in some good hard tackling to keep the home side out until the end.
*Cwmgors will be going for a fourth straight win when they entertain yet-to-win Betws this Saturday.
