Division Six West
Burry Port 17 Llandybie 24
LLANDYBIE travelled to Burry Port on Saturday for their opening league fixture. They were under pressure from the off as Burry Port got off to a flier opening the scoring within two minutes of the start with a converted try.
Llandybie tightened up their midfield immediately and came back with a good forward drive giving an opening to Tom Griffith to score wide out. Burry replied with a disputed penalty to pull ahead. Llandybie were getting on top up front with front row Dai Lloyd, Rhys Cann and Keenan Jones giving them a good platform. Rhydian Jones at eight intercepted a pass from the Burry scrum half to gallop thirty yards to score unopposed with Ben Featherstone adding the conversion. Half time they led 12 points to ten.
Llandybie suffered an injury to flanker Mike Tench but continued after lengthy treatment. The visitors forwards were on top now often driving Burry off their ball with good carries from Lyndon Davies, Rhydian Jones and Dai Lloyd with Rhys Cann taking two against the head. Good running from Griffith and Johnny Harris at centre took Tybie within striking distance and Jones powered his way over to claim his second try.
Good play from Luke Yelland and Josh Williams found Keenan Jones in support and he drew the cover to put Dafydd Nicholas clear coming on the inside, Featherstone adding the conversion.
Burry Port were not finished and good pressure gave them a converted try late on. LLandybie were not to be denied and driven on by captain Andrew Thomas and Lyndon Davies they held out to take the spoils. Mention to Trystan Tommason playing in unaccustomed second row berth and Rhys Cann new to hooker.
The whole pack were outstanding but the team tackled their hearts out and fronted up well against a strong Burry Port team who always tried to play good open rugby. Thanks to supporters who travelled to Burry to cheer their team on.
