Division Four South West
Pontardawe 5 Cwmgors 72
Newly-promoted Cwmgors began the new season much as they finished the last with a slick polished performance as they notched up a terrific opening day’s victory at Pontardawe .
The first 20 minutes proved very tight as the home side, with a very big pack, gave as good as they got.
In wetter conditions, the Pontardawe pack will no doubt come into their own, but on a dry day ideal for running rugby the conditions suited Cwm down to the ground.
With the visitors well-drilled front eight providing a solid platform, their slick back-line, with pace to burn, were given free-reign to run in some excellent tries.
Cwmgors built up a comfortable 27-0 lead by half-time to ensure the bonus point.
There were other plus points too, not least the return of wing Andrew Davies after a two-year break.
Davies opened the scoring in a productive first half while centre Lloyd Watson and man-of-the-match lock Liam Jones added further tries.
Some superb inter-passing from an electric break deserved another score only for a fumble to bring the move to an end.
The best try of the game came from full-back Mike Hodges, who finished off superbly.
Steff Rees also got on the scoresheet with a penalty and a conversion.
Ponty tried hard, but were unable to keep the rampant Cherries at bay in the second half as the visitors scored virtually at will.
Replacement wing Carwyn Lewis went over for a brace of tries while centre Lee Howells and flanker Darren Williams also crossed the whitewash.
A fine long-range break saw Darryl John gallop over and another lovely break provided a further try for Steff Rees, who also managed to converted seven of his side’s eleven tries in total.
For good measure, there was also a try for Ethan Price, whose has moved from flanker to prop this season.
This Saturday, Cwmgors host Cwmtwrch.
