South Wales Hockey League Premier Division Two

DINEFWR travelled east to take on Whitchurch Saints in what was to be an intense and physical battle.

The visitors immediately ruffled home feathers and created an erratic pace to the encounter; entering home territory within the opening seconds and having a decent shot at goal.

The exchanges continued in a similar vein throughout the first half until a break by the opposing midfield and some well-worked set pieces and passes drew out Dinefwr’s ’keeper to allow the hosts to take the lead.

Dinefwr hit back when Claire Thomas found man-ofthe- match Danielle Harrison, moved from her usual wing role into midfield.

Her effort was thwarted by the strong Saints defence, but the rebound fell to a grateful Sioned Jones who fired home the equaliser just before half time.

With emotions running high, the restart saw an increase in the physicality with a number of players suffering blows and having ankles hooked.

Dinefwr used their opponents’ ill-discipline to good advantage and piled on the pressure to ensure they would not go down without a fight.

The hunger for a second away win came to the fore as Dinefwr continued their pursuit of a victory with a break and strike from Ffion Evans.

Jones was on hand to offer a final touch and claim her and Dinefwr’s second.

With the hosts searching for an equaliser, solid defence from Dinefwr blocked a number of attempts before they launched another onslaught, culminating in a fine run and pass from Cath Cox to set up Jones for her hat-trick – aided by Harrison.

In the dying seconds Whitchurch were awarded a penalty but it was to no avail as Dinefwr secured their second win of the season.

Dinefwr host Bridgend on Saturday at 11am.
