South Wales Hockey Premier League Two
DINEFWR a’r Fro taught newly-relegated UWIC a hockey lesson and showed the Cardiff students that they face no easy task in climbing out of Premier League Two.
A frantic start saw UWIC take early control of possession only for the hosts to find themselves halted in their tracks by Dinefwr’s determined defence.
The first half settled into an evenly matched affair with the ball spending equal time in both territories.
But Dinefwr’s Stephanie Murray injected some flair into the game and took full advantage of the new rules with a series of stunning aerial passes which bypassed much of the hosts’ defensive tactics.
However, neither side was able to capitalise on their opportunities and they went into the interval on level terms.
Dinefwr opted for a change of tactics and formation during the break and the shake-up paid off soon after the restart as they brushed off the disappointments of the previous two weeks with a show of hunger and determination.
With UWIC’s opportunities repeatedly thwarted by an impressively in-form man-ofthe- match Eleri George in defence, Dinefwr took their chance to break.
George carried the ball almost the length of the pitch to provide Amy Brookes with an accurate reverse stick sweep to secure the first goal.
However, UWIC stepped up the pace and soon found an equaliser.
With several more opportunities at goal amounting to nothing for both sides, Dinefwr’s defence again provided the fulcrum for attack.
Another strong tackle saw the visitors burst forward on the break as Danielle Harrison eased ahead of the field to draw in UWIC’s goalkeeper with Danielle Murray in support.
A well-timed pass from Harrison to the ’keeper’s right found Murray who slotted home the crucial score.
Dinefwr dominated the final ten minutes to secure their first league win of the season.
