AMMANFORD had a rearranged league fixture on Saturday when cup rounds took precedence and Caldicot Town, also without a fixture, agreed to the game.

The match went to 20 minutes with both teams balancing each other out until Owen James went clear only for the visitors’ keeper to make a great save and parry the shot for a corner.

When Mathew Fisher then lost possession deep in the Ammanford box, keeper Euros Griffiths made a crucial last-ditch challenge to keep the scores level.

Ammanford’s reply was instant with Rhys Morgan, after being set free, putting a pinpoint cross into the six-yard box for Luke Fayres to score from close range and notch up his 100th goal for Ammanford.

With the game swinging firmly Ammanford’s way Fisher was brought down on the edge of the box but the resulting free kick was cleared.

Ammanford conceded a corner on 30 minutes, and the subsequent long clearance set James on a 60-yard solo run and with Caldicot caught out at the back.

James beat the last defender before slotting the ball wide of the keeper’s desperate attempt to save and into the corner of the net.

On 36 minutes Ammanford must have felt they would win the three points when James again broke clear on the left before crossing onto the path of Fisher up who scored from close range to give Ammanford a deserved three-goal lead.

Ammanford started the second half on the attack when Alex Thomas put in a long-range effort that beat the keeper but went inches over the bar.

However, Caldicot refused to give in and they pulled a goal back on 60 minutes before another concerted attack by Ammanford saw Fisher go clear.

As he made his way into shooting range, the Ammanford forward was taken out by the keeper, who was shown the red card.

Fisher made no mistake with the spot kick before brother Rhys had a shot deflected off the post.

The hosts thoroughly deserved a very rewarding result with the pace of the their attack the main factor in the win.

The win sees them climb to third in the league, although they have played a game more than some of the teams below them.

Next Saturday, Ammanford host second-placed Briton Ferry, Llansawel, managed by ex- Ammanford player Carl Shaw (KO 2.30pm).
