The speaker at the November meeting was Gillian Wright who spoke about the Heart of Wales Railway line.

She explained that the first section of the line, heading north from Swansea, was opened in 1820 and was used to carry coal and minerals to Swansea docks, further extensions gradually followed.

In the meantime lines were being laid southwards from Shrewsbury and the two sections were eventually joined, the last gap to be filled being between Llandeilo and Llandovery.

When the railways were nationalised in 1981 British Rail wanted to close the line but a small group of local enthusiasts was formed and managed to keep the line open. Now the Heart of Wales Travellers Association press Network Rail, who maintain the track, and Arriva Trains, who have the franchise to run the trains, to provide the service that local people want for both now and for the future.

After the Christmas break the next meeting will be held in St Teilo Church hall on January 30 when Claire Mansel Lewis will talk about her life as High Sheriff. New members are always welcome.
