The Annual Christmas meeting of the East Carmarthenshire Group of the Wildlife Trust of South and West Wales was addressed by Jason Lawday, Countryside Access Ranger for the area. He explained that his job was mainly to see that public rights of way - manly footpaths and bridleways - were kept open for use, that access by stile or gate was maintained, signs put in pace and access mainly to common land under the new laws was available. Good relations with landowners was always paramount. The meeting soon developed into a very lively question and answer session as so many of his audience had particular problems in a field which has always been beset by difficulties and misunderstanding ever since the 1947 Act required every parish (community) to report on their rights of way and decide on recommendations for their retention or closure. The position of the Local Access Forum about which so little is known by so many was raised and the chairman of the Forum in the county, Mr. Geoffrey Williams, who was in the meeting, said he welcomed any enquiries on 01558 822960. With grateful thanks being tendered by the chairman, Mat Ridley, the secretary reminded everybody of the next group meeting which would be at 7.30pm the Maes Elfryn Hall Llandeilo on Wednesday, January 21 when Rob Parry, Wildlife Trust Wetlands Officer, will report on the latest position on the Likelihood of Beavers being re-introduced in Wales. All will be most welcome.
